Soldier Settlement Scheme
After the War, all surviving farm apprentices who had served overseas in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) were obliged to return to their port of embarkation (for almost all this meant Adelaide).
The soldiers weren't required to complete their apprenticeships, however, if they wanted to continue working on the land, they had the opportunity to participate in the State Government's soldier settlement scheme.
Former Immigration Officer Edgar J Field administered the scheme, but as yet no records have been located to indicate that any former farm apprentices became soldier settlers. Unfortunately the main index of landholders was damaged in a fire but the search continues at State Records of South Australia through other relevant records series.
