Boy Scouts' Association

The Boy Scouts were a key partner in the 1913-14 farm apprenticeship scheme, following a visit to South Australia by Chief Scout Robert Baden-Powell in 1912.  The scheme was advertised in the Scout newsletter and Scout column of the People newspaper in March and April 1913.

34 of the scouts who arrived on board the SS Beltana (see list below) formed one of the first scout troops in the state.  They are the subject of Anthony (Tony) Aldous and Richard Mansfield's book Beginnings: The Story of the Beltana Boys (2008).

This book was published to help celebrate the centenary of scouting in Australia and is available for purchase from the SA Branch of Scouts Australia.

Tony manages the Scout Archives in South Australia and invites you to explore the rich sources available there.

Scouts on board the SS Beltana:

Seven of the eight Kibble boys who travelled on board the SS Geelong were also scouts and it is likely there were others who arrived on the SS Irishman and Orsova.
